  • Frequently Asked Business Utilities Questions

Which UK businesses use the most energy?

Did you know that the energy we use at home only accounts for a quarter of the total energy used in the UK? The remaining three-quarters is attributable to business energy and transport energy. Let's have a look at which sectors use the most energy, and which utilities sources they use.

How is energy measured?

To be able to compare business energy sectors effectively, we will use the 'KTOE' unit, which means 'kilotonne of oil equivalent'. All information comes from the Office of National Statistics in a report published in July 2018.

The results

- Private offices – 3,539 ktoe

- Chemical manufacturing – 2,874 ktoe

- Hospitality – 2,458 ktoe

- Food products manufacturing – 2,242 ktoe

- Hospitals – 2,237 ktoe

- Non-metallic mineral manufacturing     1,924 ktoe

- Basic metals manufacturing – 1,489       ktoe

- Rubber and plastic manufacturing –       1,442 ktoe

- Small shops – 1,376 ktoe

- Paper products manufacturing – 1,297 ktoe

The results show that an abundance of small machines appears to be less energy efficient than the use of large, industrial machines. Private offices containing computers, photocopiers, network hubs, projectors and phones burn the most energy, whilst the manufacture of paper to stock these offices creates the least. The intensive heat required for chemical processing places it high in the list, whereas simpler industrial processes such as rubber weigh in at substantially lower energy rates.

3 energy efficiency mistakes that cost businesses money

A great way for a business to save money is to consider switching to a different commercial utilities supplier. But you will not enjoy the savings you really want to if your business energy usage is still suffering from the effects of these all too common mistakes.

Poor insulation

Insulation is one of the best things you can do to lower your energy costs, and it's also something that businesses often ignore. Think about your business premises - when was the last time it was properly insulated? Is it definitely insulated at all? Do you even know? If you don't, that's a problem.

It may seem like a bit of an investment and a disruption to your daily business operations, but you will quickly make returns on your investment multiple times over in the form of lower heating bills. Heating a badly insulated building is basically throwing money away.

Not turning off equipment

Businesses waste untold amounts of electricity by not properly turning off their lights, computers, machinery, and other office equipment when not in use. You may think leaving your office workstations on standby overnight isn't a problem, but the reality is that it does cost you considerably.

Think hard about the normal practices in your lights left on in rooms that employees hardly ever use? Are Machines left on all day when they're used at most once or twice? It might seem like small fry, but the cumulative savings will always add up quickly.

Not using natural light

Just as green energy uses natural resources to develop energy, so too can you make the most of a natural resource to provide your lighting. This is especially useful if you're considering searching for new businesses premises, or you're in the process of designing or constructing one yourself.

There is also another benefit, in that natural light has been proven to lift the mood of employees. Sterile light from unnatural resources brings employee morale down, while making sure more natural light is available saves on light bulbs and electricity while encouraging happier staff who are able to work more efficiently. How can I save money on my commercial energy utilities?

Saving money heavily relies on your contract. You must be on a good rate that works around your businesses working hours and consumption requirements. Does your company use more energy at night than during the day? Making sure your on the right contract is the most important factor when saving money.

Aside from your contract, when looking to save money, you can consider a smart meter or put in place the more obvious recommendations; turning off lights and heating when they're not in use. Re wiring lighting circuits and installing voltage optimisation devices can help reduce your usage too.

The energy mix / what type of energy do businesses use?

What type of energy do businesses use?

The UK has three primary fuels and they are used as follows:

1. Solid fuels, bioenergy and petrol - 50%
2. Natural gas - 32%
3. Electricity - 18%

The Future

The amount and form of utilities energy that UK businesses consume has undergone dramatic changes since the 1970s. Although solid fuel remains the leading source of energy for both commercial use (as shown above) and also domestic use, natural gas usage is set to undergo a dramatic change as the UK strives to make reductions in its carbon emissions. In fact, natural gas usage has actually increased 3.2% in the last 12 months, representing the beginnings of this change.

However, as the UK population rises, so will the demand for energy, so although proportions can change, we can still expect an increase in energy usage overall. Not least as a reliable energy source is the foundation of British business and industry. So if your business is in need of a new energy contract, why not compare quotes on Utility Bidder to get the best deal.

I’m out of contract, what does this mean for my utilities?

If your business is out of contract, then your business energy will be on a variable rate. Subsequently, you will be paying a higher rate for your gas and electricity.

Renewing or switching to the correct provider will ensure you make the best available savings on your utility bills.

I’m moving premises, what do I do about my energy supply?

This is a great opportunity for you to find the best deal. This is where Utility Bidder come in - we can handle the whole process for you, allowing you to move premises without worrying about your gas and electricity.

If your happy with your current supplier and would prefer to stay with them, we can help you with that too - we will speak with our account manager and negotiate the best deal for you.

Why would I look to change my utilities contract early?

Due to the continuous increasing prices of business energy, we suggest taking advantage of the 1 year renewal window and renewing early.

Most suppliers open their renewal window 6 months before the contract is due to end. But as mentioned above, with the majority of suppliers, this is a great opportunity to lock in the best energy deal 12 months earlier.

Signing a new contract early allows you to lock in the current price, potentially saving your company thousands of pounds on your energy bills.

How do I find out when my energy contract ends?

Your contract end date will be located on your most recent gas or electricity bill. If you cannot find a bill then contact us and one of our energy consultants will run over a LOA (letter of authority) with you. This gives us access to find out the details of your supplier.

It's important that you don't allow your business to run out of contract because you will be moved on to a variable rate.

We experience many customers from a variety of businesses, that find themselves paying high variable rates. Utility Bidder consultants can speak with your supplier.
